And thats where we run into problems, too, because we see this kid that has huge talent. And so were constantly reviewing our own performances and constantly trying to tweak it to change it. And so this data collection is critical because what we can project, we can project where a kids going to go based on this fundamental principle of the cauldron. Anson: Well, actually, Im reading all the time, but most of the ideas we bring in practice dont come directly from the reading, they just come from us looking at this thinking you know what, this isnt working. And then basically getting their personal narrative to the truth and my opinion, those are the three most critical things about what my responsibility here is for these wonderful kids I get to train. The top three in my program ended up winning gold medals in the Olympics, and ended up winning world championships in the United States. And how do you know they dont want to work for you? And let me tell you something. To the minute, its telling me whats going to happen in every single second of this practice. So if a kid comes in and they havent done very well that season, and this is a post season review, they all have a protective narrative thats usually, in my environment, organized and I guess constructed in a loop with their parents. And so I want to be able to write them a brilliant recommendation into any part of their future. Right now were in the heart of the womens World Cup, and this inspired me to learn from elite athletes and coaches to unpack their tips and tricks for building winning cultures. In fact thought maybe I should adopt these, these are fantastic. And the parents are now screaming at the teacher. And now we bring in our own university people. Like this interview. The top 10 are basically starters, the top 16 basically playing every game.The top five end up signing pro contracts. [Laughs.] So if we have 30 players in the roster, in the 28 different categories everyones ranked from 1 to 30. Theres a call right now towards authoritarianism. They guide the players from season to season, practice to practice, minute to minute. Cause you know, all you did for me is tell me this wasnt good enough. And it just gave me a completely different perspective, because my perspective is everyone on my roster, not the one individual thats hurting my roster. Melissa: I love that. Can business save America in a very positive sense? So the first step in leading anyone is to win their trust. And again, as I mentioned earlier, I read reams of business books. So this is where were trying to drive them. And then all of these different categories have different values. I dont think he understands who is in the room. Now is the period to escape the protection of loving parents that dont want you to get hurt. You have 4 years to get ready for the chaos at the university. What you have to recruit and who you have to hire is character. Im going to try it. Most certainly. I also tell them if I tell the press you have great potential what Im saying is youre not worth a shit right now. Anson: Hi. Melissa: Yeah, thats definitely, I mean, I think recruiting and hiring really good culture fits is a, it is a hard, hard thing. Anson: First of all we do it 3 times a year, not once. Now, how did I sort of stumble on this stuff? But these were leaders. And basically what he is trying to tell me. Youre a businessman. And obviously youre going to have a different set just based on your own culture. Shes telling me the story in the New York Times, and I am captivated by it. When I was a young coach, Dean Smith, the legendary former basketball coach at the University of North Carolina, who was Michael Jordans college coach. Ive learned the lesson that some people just dont want to be in my culture. I was one of the warm-up bands along with Stephen Covey and Hyrum Smith. First five guys, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and practice performance. So the first thing you have to embrace is that everyones different. Because theyve been filled with absolute garbage from their parents and often from their youth coaches. So its almost like a gender pressure against leadership. Whats the 1 word you think of when you think about culture? Of course were all excited by huge talent and so the temptation is always to recruit talent. Hes led a team to 101 game winning streak, coached 13 different women to a total of 20 national Player of the Year awards, member of the UNC Hall of Fame and the Soccer Hall of Fame, and hes coached some of the best players in soccer history, including Michelle Akers, Mia Hamm, Tobin Heath, Crystal Dunn, and one of my colleagues here at Eagle Hill, Lindsay Henson. And I promise you if you took that energy that youve poured into a substandard salesman and you poured it into the top people in their company, your bottom line would be better. Coach Dorrance: I just finished reading a book and Im going to recommend it to all of your listeners right now. Thats what elementary school children do in the United States. Brodsky looks at all and says, Okay, you guys dont memorize this poetry and this literature, and none of you guys get your PhDs. And with tails firmly tucked between their legs, they went out of his office and got to work. And one of the things Ive seen recently is that we, in fact we did a study on this and found that 47% of corporate America does not know their organizations core values, which, if you think about it, on one hand is extremely surprising. But right now for us its hit or miss. Now did we give them an opportunity to lead? One of the most destructive things in athletics are the whiners. She called me up one day. So now what I do, if theyre below that black line, I meet with them, I talk about how wonderful it would be for them to transfer to Stanford and destroy their program. Then finally, its their soccer success. Here are the core values of the UNC women's soccer team: We don't whine. Anson: Well, youre very kind with that introduction. Melissa: And where do you seek these new ideas? You see, in this first slide, the parents are screaming at the kid. Yes. And Id love to tell you something differently, but I just dont have an effective tool yet. And for us to see whats working all we have to do is to go to our test. So its critical in the player review that we do 3 times a year is you review all the data with them. Coach Dorrance: Yes. Learn how your comment data is processed. Its not to save the world or to save people. Their parents love them out of this diluted feeling that, Im going to build my kids self-esteem by telling them how wonderful they are when theyre not. And now all of a sudden, I have to deal with these kids. She needs to live. Everyone is motivated differently and youve got to get to the core of who they are. I have tried so many different ways to develop leaders. Then we do it post season in January, and then we do it at the end of the spring as theyre about to go on their summer break. The UNC MPA program prepares public service leaders. Now if I say you are a leader, heres the way youre going to have to qualify. There was nothing inspiring about them, and I was thinking gosh, none of this stuff works. And then what was really cool is in the spring of every players senior year we have our final banquet. It can save the United States, but it has to be done in the right way. And Ill be honest with you, nothing seemed to work and all of a sudden I am reading this thing out of the New York Times magazine. They have to get a sense of their relationship with you that you appreciate the fact they are different. If a woman is incredibly confident, I am never going to touch that. So over the past 28 years, since our program began in 1979, what are the best elements of our tradition? Anson: Well, its hit or miss, I mean. Anson: Then I dont have to prepareyeah, I dont want to prepare a speech. Im sorry, but I completely disagree with what youre saying. And he would be very patient and he wouldnt debate them and he would just nod and let them finish. And what she talked about was when I shared with her basically everyone in the rooms opinion of her and how she felt she had to change, and then basically she did. First of all, they get immediate feedback, but the other advantage is, they want to get to the top and they will know if theyre not pushing hard enough or working hard enough. But heres what youve got to do. Today Ill be talking to Anson Dorrance, the head coach of the womens soccer program at the University of North Carolina, and one of the most successful, if not the most successful, coaches in the history of college athletics.
